World Of Domain Names Likely To Drastically Change
Ever since the implementation and use of the Internet, most of the world has remained used to domain names that end in .com, .net, or .org, and other variations. There are, in all, about 22, what the industry calls, “generic top-level domains.” It appears that this will soon be changing and will dramatically expand what can be used as a suffix.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently decided to take this next step. Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of ICANN, recently stated that, “ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind.” There have been many innovations, like Wi-Fi and vmware hosting that has placed the online world leaps and bounds ahead of dial-up and modems. It’s questionable though whether this is just a way to make more money or offer another opportunity for the free market to implement further innovations.
Whatever the end result, the process is slated to kick off next year and it’s likely to start a trademark frenzy. It’s pretty expensive and not everyone will be able to afford it. The application fee alone costs $185, 000 with the additional cost $25, 000 for every year after that. Companies and businesses across the globe will be able to attach these suffixes to consumer goods, financial services, and high-profile entertainment, just to name a few. These are likely to be the first to apply given that companies will want to protect their brand.
It’s not just about having a good web site with excellent cloud hosting services and a catchy site anymore. It’s just going to create another front. One commentator stated, in an interview with the Associated Press, that this new option, “Is going to be a trademark headache. Businesses are likely to structure their online presence in multiple ways, say IBM.think or Lenovo.think. Who exactly will get that ‘think’ domain? And in how many scripts would you need to reserve ‘think?’
It remains to be seen as to how well this will go over. Some are arguing that this will, in the end, make the whole online world more democratic but opponents say that all it’s going to cause is a very long, drawn-out, and expensive battle over trademarks and branding. A proverbial, suffix slap-fight over who gets naming rights. Likely it’s just going to make the online world more confusing due to minute variations in web site names.

You said it – it’s likely to start a trademark frenzy. I think it will be the wild wild west of brand grabbing.
But in practical terms, only the very big business can actually take advantage of the new norms. Its too expensive for anyone else.

Of course! a unique and new change in the blogging ocean and also there available some domains in economical prices. Last days I have bought some good targeted niche domain names rather than dot com in a very cheap price .
I am for this new option and the chance of every business to promote the products in every possible way. If the company has some money then why not to pay them in such a way?
Interesting times are coming, however it is still not clear if this domains will be available for the public and what results will appear in the search engines.
With an application fee of US$ 185000 these company domain name extensions will only be for the elite, the normal man has to stick to conventional domains like .com and country domain extensions.
it would be interesting to see how major companies get their own domains like .google or .apple

It’s costly, it can be messy and confusing but nevertheless it’s interesting to have new and creative domain names. These are interesting times…
Competition is good until it isn’t. It will start with blocking of .xxx and next thing blocked is…. just saying.

I’ve been reading a lot about this, and at first I was excited that they’ve finally embraced the alternative URL possibilities that have always been there. However I’m becoming more concerned and annoyed — the costs for this service are OUTRAGEOUS. Seriously, can anyone explain ANY practical reasons why the third word in a URL should be so prohibitively expensive?

This is really interesting, and surely enough, only big corporations and companies can afford those customized domain names!

Its being designed only for the giant players because its too costly and people like us can only discuss
Just reading the words ‘customized domain names’ is enough to stir excitement and I wonder what all side effects this development is going to bring.
This surely seems like a leap forward in the domain name department as it hasn’t undergone much changes ever since its advent.
Moreover, I dont think the suffixes will be of the type .anything (lol) but a much larger variety will emerge compared to the present scenario of limited names.
Totally a game-changer though !
That is really interesting, but as you said i don’t think many will be able to afford this, but major corporations could very well benefit from it.
