Ways To Avoid Failure In the Web Design Business
Many professional web designing companies who know well about their business often make number of mistakes in their business model. If those mistakes are repeated consistently then this may surely lead to failure. The mistakes maybe unnoticeable by even the experts, you must surely avoid them. Here are some points discussed that you should follow for the success of your business. An expert web designer started his business in the rural area of California but did not follow these points, as a result failed in his business just due to ignorance of these points:
Avoid Underpricing your Services:
Some website designers make cheap websites in order to build a portfolio. It is the most common mistake that most web designers do. If you are spending 40% of your time on designing business and 60% on marketing plan. Then charge the price from your client for the time you spent in marketing. This will give you enough revenue to pay for all the non-paying time you use marketing your business.
Set your Boundaries:
Set your boundaries about the services that you are going to offer in the particular amount. Make them clear that any extra work will be charged separately because it requires extra time and expertise. Remember that you are in business to make money.
It happens many times that small business websites owners pay for their small website and then waste your time by asking different questions and requests to add one small thing. Avoid these things and clear the boundaries from the very start.
If your client asks for extras and you agree on providing it, make them sure that it is not free. You can sell your time and expertise. Do not provide free service if you want success in business.
Avoid viewing your Clients as Temporary:
Many people start a business due to their interest or they want to make something new. After working on a project, they want to change it and leave the old project behind. It is not a good attitude because your client needs updates with the passage of time and can add noteworthy revenue to your business. A satisfied client is also among one of the major links in your advertising network.
Look for Recurring Revenue Opportunities:
A wise website designer looks for recurring revenue opportunities. There are numerous ways to set up some recurring revenue. It may include Annual maintenance contracts, reselling webhosting, updating designs, providing reoccurring services, etc.
Make Website According to Business Demand:
Many website designers focus on making pretty websites to attract customers. However, this is not a wise idea. Your website should represent your business because just prettiness of website never leads you towards success. Web designer should know the purpose whether it is to sell goods, or any other. The web design should depict its purpose and should have all the related items that make this purpose successful.

Graphic and Webdesign is a very competive business. There are a lot of good freelancers, who do impressive word for low prices. Then you have to compete against all the webdesign service and theme sites. A few years ago, it wasn’t that hard to start a webdesign business and working for local companys. Whith the grows of the internet you got more potentially clients, but even more global competition.

work efficiency & “Avoid viewing your Clients as Temporary” thats the most important point. If you can do your 1st work with a new client with no profit or minimum profit provide your best work. then that client will become a recurring client. lucrative web designing isn’t that hard but need at least 95% customer satisfaction
Yes, If you provide good service from time to time that will impress the client and they would refer your services. This is the client building process, rather then wasting time looking for new clients this method can work out good and help build a reputation.

Unfortunately so many companies and freelancers are underpricing their services. And again unfortunately not every company owner understand that one particular website need to be maintained and refreshed on regular basis.

Underpricing they do for the basic reason, so many can afford, but not an effective way. If you maintain the quality of work, most likely your work will be recognized and recommended. Keep low marginal profits but provide client satisfactory services. Expecting initial high profits can turn out to be a spoiler for long term.

Agree, “Price defines the quality”. Big clients don’t go for low quality work as price is not the factor. They serious about their business so they expect the best quality.

Working in the web design & development industry, these are definitely the sort of problems we face on a daily basis. The most important I think has to be the point of ‘Avoid viewing your Clients as Temporary’ – too true! Don’t just take any client on board. Be picky, choose clients who you know will be long term. If you build a good relationship with these sort of clients, and do a good job, they will come back for your services time and time again. Help their company expand online, and as they progress, requiring a bigger site, a better site, who do you think they’ll come to ask for help?

Great Article. I have been running my web design and SEO business for about 10 years and I agree that you should not under price your services, don’t get into a price war with your competitors. You may need to turn away jobs from people that do not want to pay a reasonable price. Also try and get repeat business, keep in touch with your client base, sell them ongoing hosting and maintenance. My best earner now is my SEO service which is ongoing.
