Using Page or Site relevance?

| May 27, 2010 | 20 Comments More

SEOs around the world build links in their own ways, but the main point is that every one of them does build links! There is a defining factor that determines a difference between SEOs the way in which they conduct their link building activities. Do we build links using relevant websites or do we build links from various sites that are not related to our own. Let’s have a look and see which of these is the best practice is and which doesn’t work quite so well.

Some SEOs use any site possible to drop links on; this provides some power back to your desired site, but there is no relevance charged through the link. Relevance is where the site you are linking from is on topic and discussing the same areas as your own. However one particular argument that has come out of recent SEO conferences is that relevance may not need to be site wide.

It has been discussed that as long as the page on the site that you are linking from has relevant terms based on it, then more power from the page will be funnelled through your link. The argument is that you are not spamming a site, which demonstrates that your site deserves a link on the specific site.

However how much weight would a link on a finance site, with a page about “marine life at the bottom of the ocean” have? This brings around another point, that maybe site wide relevance is important. If your finance site was to create a page dedicated to marine life, would this show Google that you have something relevant to share, or does the page become less powerful than others. Google has demonstrated that relevant links do actually receive more power than those through a semantic value, but I believe that it can be quite difficult to differentiate between some sites, even though they may appear to be irrelevant.

A site based around finance with links to a green living website could have great relevance, but not on face value. The sites could be discussing how to save money and keep your home bills low. Overall I think that every link is powerful, but the amount of power passed through “relevant” links is only of slightly greater value, not enough to damage your sites link power, if all you do is link from less relevant sites.

  4. Your links are seen as votes or referrals by the search engine bots. These votes count towards your authority if they come from high PR web pages within your greater “niche”. The more relevant the place the link comes from, the better for your web page.

  5. You’re absolutely right. The relevant links would have better value, but lets not forget that relevancy cannot be and exact measure, so, I don’t imagine that Google is hardly modifying the value of links passing from one site to another based on relevancy. I mean since this science is not exact or accurate, would you be able to put a very high weight for it if your were Google? I don’t think so…

Well Google is Google and who knows, keeping in mind the algorithm they use (about which we certainly know nothing then a few factors) I really cannot be sure if the relevancy affects or not

  6. You bring up some interesting points, for sure. I wonder though – how often would an authority site have a page on something so wildly off topic? That kind of thing seems to be the case more often from spammy blogs and so on.
Aged, respectable and worthwhile pages typically correspond with the overall theme of the site, in my experience.

Yup you are right bro, Authority sites do not tend to go out of their “niche” when writing content as well as when building links
