Great post for a newbie searching for web hosting. I agree with you that most web sites are hosted on Linux Apache PHP and mySQL. If you need a host for SQL Server then you can choose a Windows platform.

I remember my first hosting server was windows and it was damn slow and cpnal was very complicated. Later I switched to linux which is not only fast but also the cPanel is very user friendly.

This is a very important factor which I unfortunately didn’t think about when I went about choosing a host for one of my sites, which turned out to be a very grave and costly mistake. Choosing a Windows machine tied me down to a MS SQL DB (Stupid Hosting Company) while the developer of my site had used MySQL!! I had to spend more money on getting the site running then I expected to, on top of paying a premium for the OS!!
Linux is the best operating system.I have got grip on Linux when I was university student.From that time to now I am fan of Linux. For web hosting services I will prefer it.

I guess that most of the people stick to PHP and HTML and choose Unix/Linux based hosting which support Apachi, MySQL and PHP. ASP is popular too, but most CMS are based on PHP.
Linux is the best operating system out there. Aside from being an open source, it is stable when you have a heavy site traffic. Remember, there’s no virus in Linux which is really a good thing. Cheers!
