Tips For Freelancers To Increase Productivity

| October 5, 2011 | 13 Comments More

Working freelance has its perks but it also come with tons of limitations. It is normally believed that freelancers enjoy the liberty of working on their own terms with no monitoring and work stress as such.

However, it is true that because of mismanagement, the work of a couple of hours can take many days to complete, thus severely affecting your productivity. There are many freelancers who can manage time so well that their productivity helps them earn more than others. Following are some of the tips which you can utilize to increase your productivity.

Set and maintain decorum

Freelancers who work online can be easily distracted. They are prone to watching videos, chatting with friends, commenting on posts, reading irrelevant blogs and browsing the web. If you can’t curb this habit, then you better discard the idea of working freelance.

You must discipline yourself and work according to a strict schedule. Allocate proper time to work. Set time durations for different tasks and try to finish your work within the specified time. You can take a 10 minutes break after every few hours to check your inbox, Facebook, G+ and Twitter accounts. If an email or activity other than work requires more than 10 minutes, take a note of it and get back to it as soon as you finish your work.

Don’t use Headphones

Headphones block sounds of your surrounding and also apply pressure on your ear canals which consequently reduce the blood supply to brain and eyes. Excessive use of the headphones is reported to cause strain on eyes and brain and effect work efficiency and productivity.

Keep a pen and paper with you

The world has so smoothly shifted to keyboard that a pen is now mainly used for signing cheques only. Writing with a pen automatically increases concentration and you don’t need to make an obvious effort for doing so.  Bring it back in your work routine. You can make an outline for your project on a paper, add points, draw plans and write down suggestions before beginning your work. Once you have a plan chalked out, you can concentrate on the task at hand rather than worrying about what you would do next.

Set stopwatch on your desktop

Using a stopwatch helps you calculate the time you normally take to finish one project. You might find it annoying in the beginning to work with a clock ticking before you but it would make you feel better when you’ll see the improvement in your work speed. Stopwatch helps you challenge yourself and push your own limits. The only hurdle in the way of your productivity is you. So you need to be prepared to challenge yourself.

Figure out the most suitable time of the day

It could be a ringing phone or door bell, cat messing up with the fish bowl or even the whistling kettle on stove and hundreds of factors combine to limit the prospects of working from home. You can save yourself a lot of hassle by dedicated the most suitable time of the day to your work. There are certain times of the day and night when such fuss is reduced to minimum. Those particular hours could be the most productive time of the day for you. Some people like to work at night, while others prefer doing it in the morning. If you have been unable to do better in the afternoons or at night, may be its time to change your work shift.

Most freelancers became that because they didn’t want to work fixed schedules and have a program forcing them to work when they don’t feel like it. So it’s only natural that two hours of work get spread on 5 or 10. Not that it’s a healthy life style, and it definitely touches heavily on productivity, but i can understand them.
