The Importance Of Approving Comments Before They Are Posted

| July 27, 2011 | 32 Comments More

Being a blogger entails a lot of fun and money as well especially when you know how to monetize your blog. However, let’s face it; there are some problems and issues that we bloggers do encounter, “spammers”. Yes, having those non-sense comments on every blog post is such a nuisance. Therefore, it is very important to approve comments first before they can be put live on the blog.

blog commenting

The following are the reasons for approving comments:

Eliminate Spam Comments

One of the most annoying things that you see around in blogs is when some people are spamming blog posts with their nonsense comments, “I like your post”, “Thank You for such an informational post”, etc. These comments are somewhat generalized in the sense that you can use them over and over again and might seem like a legitimate comment as if the commenter reads the entire post. But in reality, it is just a front of a spammer who wants to get more links for his own benefit.

Thus, it is important that comments need to be approved before they will be placed live on a blog post. This will lessen or even eliminate spam comments in the future.

The Flow Of The Interaction Is Wholesome

Another thing also, this will help you clean out trashy comments before they can start spreading non-sense posts to your post. This will ensure that every comment that is being posted on your blog is wholesome and the interaction will not go sour or out of the topics comments can be eliminated as well.

Through comment approval, you will have a good flow of interaction with your loyal visitors or one-time visitor.

Proper Management Of Your Blog

Approving comments form part of what we call “proper management of a blog”. In this way, you can be assured that everything flows smoothly without a hint of dirt, nonsense statements or over-the-top comments that will ruin the reputation of your entire blog.

This can serve as a good way to detect those people who are spamming your blog with automated comments.

 Bottom Line

When it comes to approving comments, what you are looking for are those comments that do add up to the continuation of the conversation within the comment’s area. Why? It is because the more people who will comment on your blog, the more your blog post and your blog site will look good on search engines. This will help you generate good traffic as well.

In addition to the reasons you mentioned many publicists and PR agencies won`t work with you unless there is a tight control over user generated content ( which the comments are ).

I think there are many good spam protection methods, including captcha images and questions, I usually auto approve comments and reply to every single comment, those that doesn’t look good get deleted after that.

I agree with the reasons given here, but at the same time some bloggers are too critical to any comment you post and they can not approve your comment just because they think it is nuisance. But may be some other readers will find it catching. A blogger should not be very subjective.

  6. You are right. It can be a big put off to comment on blogs that have a long list of asinine spam comments. It kills user interaction and makes people wanting to leave a genuine comment run.

But dealing with comments itself can become a big job – especially for a blog that attracts huge traffic.

Do you have a method or structure for dealing with comments? Any tips on this area would be good to know.

J/K… But really, this is great information to have regarding blogging. It took me awhile to realize with my own blog that people weren’t actually commenting as much as advertising. I was a little heartbroken at first, but now I realize that quality is better than quantity.

I agree, daily few of my blogs receive more than 200 spam comments. I read a post a couple a weeks ago, including some of those ridiculous comments and posts, some even doesn’t make any sense.

  10. Anna says:

As soon as you allowed to comment your post you should be ready to approve the comments, it is a kind of duty if you want some interaction between you and the readers then.

  11. Jenny says:

I use Akismet and moderate all the comments before they are being published on my blog. I’ve set the owner approval, so I check the comments once a week and delete the spammy ones.
Of course I don’t get 200 comments as Andy does, but I think it’s Akismet’s work to eliminate the spam flow. And I can say it works great.

  12. Andreas from Blog Advertising says:

Any blogger should take 1-x minutes per day, depending on the amount of comments received, to review and approve or delete comments before they are posted life, this is in order to ensure blog hygiene. Time can be saved by employing a top spam tool and auto posting of comments of approved users.

I don’t think its a good idea to moderate comments.

First of all automated spams can be stopped easily by using captcha or a simple checkbox.

Second there are many plugins available which won’t allow spam comments with keywords and will send it for moderation. I use intensedebate and it has this feature enabled by default.

Thirdly if someone writes a comment just to say thank you without using any keywords i don’t think it is necessarily a spam. And after all i see people who have moderation on allowing such short comments too.

And lastly i don’t really like to visit a site where i post a comment and it takes at least a day or 2 to get approved. That’s a turn off for me..

But again i am still new to blogging so maybe i am missing a point:/

    Hi Shiva,
All comments less than 10 words, without content, do not add anything new article etc.
shall not be accepted. A good blog is based on good articles with good comments.

  26. Peggy Fratky says:

It is very important to moderate what ever what ever you see before posted. Some people just spam and also sometimes make use of commenting software to do as many comments as possible this needs to be stopped. Also some people post bad comments and abuse in comments that can also be stopped if we moderate comments.

Activating the Auto-Approve feature indeed shows laziness. It’s something that a serious blogger would never do. What can you possibly gain if all comments on your blog are automatically approved and you allow spammers and detractors to put negativity on your blog. It is therefore important to moderate each and every comment……..

  28. Dale says:

advantage of commenting on blogs that approve comments manually is that you might trigger interest to the blogger and get a new visitor to your blog, which is very good, especially if you are in the same niche. I guess you all know it’s great to network with people from your niche and exchange your experiences.

  29. Giles Vernon says:

I will always approve comments that look like the poster has read the topic, even if reply is simply to acknowledge its a good topic. Of course many blogs regard the latter as spam as often the reply is written without reading trhe topic. But yes of course its important moderate blog replies, as i agree that as soon as i start reading a blog and i get the feeling the replies have not be moderated i tend to stop reading that blog.

  30. Alex says:

It is hard to maintain the high standards of a blog. However, I believe that the good results can only appear on the long run, therefore as long as you deliver quality, the results will turn out to be excellent.
