The Explosion of VOIP

| November 24, 2010 | 11 Comments More

VOIP is something that has been recently blowing up- everything from Skype, to Google Voice, to Line2 have been allowing users to use VOIP for free phone calls and SMS. There’s quite a few ways to implement this into your daily routine to full take advantage of what VOIP has to offer.

Let me list the ways.

Second Line/Business Number

Having a second line or number can be pretty useful- especially when you’re not technically paying much for the second one. You probably realize that cell coverage can get kind of shady in certain places so if you have the capability to use WiFi… do it. Since many of us don’t work out of an office, or may work off their cell phone, I’m sure it’s not thrilling to think that your personal cell phone number is listed on your card. Google Voice and Line2 both have the ability to assign you new numbers so you won’t give your original one out to potential clients.

Evading Marketing Companies-

How many times have you signed up for services (I, for instance, recently signed up at Smoothie King to get text alerts when there are special deals going on) and then get bombarded with texts that are probably costing you cash or a cash advance unless you have an unlimited plan. And even then- who wants to give out their actual number to a marketing company?

Using a VOIP service with SMS can allow you to get those annoying text messages and not have it get taken out of your monthly allowance. After all, not all of us are mad texters who have unlimited plans.

Doing Business Anywhere-

You’ll no longer have to put off important business calls because you’re afraid to use your minutes or miss important calls. Dialing out on VOIP will allow you to use internet connection, free, for those long calls- rather than waste your own minutes on your plan. Using a program like Skype can not only allow you to have meetings virtually, but also use Skype on your phone via WiFi.

Line2 (who recently launched the Mile High Text Club contest) has the ability to allow you to receive incoming coming while on the other line. It won’t kick you off your original call, so you won’t have to worry about being disconnected while in a meeting. It also gives you the ability to text on a plane. Yup… text. So you can keep business going even while you’re flying out.

Doing business (whether personal or company related) needs to be something that can be done at our leisure, and not confined to our homes or offices. Having so many VOIP apps out on the market, each that offer different features, assures us that something is out there that can fit our lifestyle.

VoIP is good for evading the telemarketing companies. When I was not using VoIP even with my landline on the Federal Do Not Call registry and fax number there too, I would still get calls. My VoIP has cut down on these nuissance calls.
