Should You Start a New Blog from Scratch, or Buy an Established Blog?
It seems like everyone is doing some form of blogging online. Even just writing on Facebook or Twitter could be seen as a form of blogging. With more people writing about their daily life and thoughts online, more people are turning to wordpress and building their own blog sites. With that said… if you are just starting in the blogging space, would you prefer to start a blog from scratch, or purchase a blog that is already established? Let’s break down the pros and cons for each.
Starting a New Blog from Scratch
- Learning how to use WordPress (easy)
- Creating quality posts (moderate)
- Getting ranked in the search engines (moderate)
- Having a Google PageRank (moderate + time)
- Quality back links from authority site (hard + time)
Buying an Established Blog
- Content already created and indexed
- May already have Google PageRank
- Possible backlinks from many sites
- Revenue generation model in place
What Method is Right for You?
These are just a quick few points that you will need to think about when starting a new blog. If you want to create a blog for the simple concept of just writing about your daily life and interact with other readers, then you should definitely start your own blog from scratch.
However, if you are going to start blogging for the concept of creating a business and making money online, you should look at the potential upside to buying an already established blog. When purchasing an already established site, you get to by pass all of the simple and tedious tasks such as creating content, building backlinks and blog design. Depending on the investment you have to spend on a blog, your options will vary.
Using these same concepts and principles, I’ve purchased and sold many web sites and blogs through Flippa.com. This should be one of your first places to look for a new web site or blog to purchase. Site auctions range anywhere from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to over a million dollars!
If you would like to learn more about what you should look for when buying a blog or starting your own, be sure to check out my new book called “Flip This Web Site“. I’ve been on both sides of the story for over a decade now, and while I love creating web sites and blogs, it certainly does take up a lot of time. Make sure you are spending yours wisely!

If you’re the business-minded type, buying a well-established blog is a good investment. But if you want to learn the “dirty work” first, then start a blog and you can buy off a blog eventually.

Great share Zac…. I’d prefer starting a new blog from scratch and build it my own way rather than buying an established one

Thats my thinking too.
It can take lots of time to edit an existing blog to match my requirements, so it´s often easier to do it myself from the scratch, but I´m buying older domains from time to time to use them for new blogs.

Million dollar question, personally I would never buy an established blog, but create one from the scratch myself for optimal results.
I think buying an established blog is the best. there is an huge potential in an established blog. nice points zac, thanks.

I still choose to start a blog myself than to buy a ready one as this is a chance to get more experience and to understand if you can do this work or not. I think it is quite hard to write good posts and promote a blog as it takes time to find the right ways that help your blog become popular.
Starting a blog from scratch is good,if you have time and resources as you can change the way of blog as you like

Starting a blog from scratch is Good but buying an established blog makes life much easier, cos you have less things to worry about especially when it comes to SEO.
Starting a new blog is better than buying another blog..

Starting from scratch is good for those who have never built a website on their own before. By doing the process on your own (even if this includes outsourcing), you begin to obtain a feel for how much a website is worth. This comes in very handy when you do decide to buy established websites as you will be able to gauge how much it is worth so you don’t overpay.
If you have no time and limited resources you can always buy a ready blog, but it loses the individuality and it will take a long time to fresh it up and to add your own word there.
Creating a new blog is easy, but maintaining and creating awareness about it may take time and lots of strategizing.

It is very costly to buy a blog from flippa.I have read on blog that a site that earn $60 per month can be sold at $2000 on flippa.com
Usually the site value is 15-20 times the monthly income. Ofc in some cases people buy websites for even 50 times the monthly value. That’s insane:D

WOW! $2000? For that money you can buy a lot of content and back links for your new blog.
I like to start my own blogs, do things your own way and play by your own rules.

You have explained in both sides for making a new blog and to buy an established one…………. We have understand that, new blog for personal blogging and purchasing established blog for professional blogging. Am I right?
Hi Zac,
There certainly are pros and cons of each. I prefer to start from scratch because that’s the part I enjoy the most, but I agree that it certainly is time consuming. And sometimes I get bored of the niche so I’m ready to sell it on to someone who is eager to keep it going.
Thanks,

I would rather start one from scratch and build it up myself.
Doing it this way will provide more satisfaction and appreciation of your own work in the long run. Not only that, but you can build it up the way you want to build it up and not buy this strange pre-established blog and you don’t know how the original author built it as everyone does things differently.

Well I think starting a new blog from scratch needs Patience and character. Its a tough job and it tests the person a lot…
Whereas taking over an existing blog, i think the person should be business oriented and should have some experience writing blogs.. else its of no use :/

If you can afford it, I think buying an existing blog makes more sense, assuming it fits into your preferred subject matter area.

I would certainly advocate building your own blog from the ground up! You can be proud to know that you built your dream blog from scratch and that its your vision being sent out to the world. Anyway, I think the majority of would-be bloggers are not in the position to actually purchase a popular blog. We’re talking big bucks here!

Starting my own blog works best for me. Thank you for writing about both sides of such decision.
It’s perfect time to make some plans for the long run and it is time to be happy. I have read this post and if I could I desire to counsel you few interesting things or tips. Maybe you can write subsequent articles regarding this article. I desire to learn more issues approximately it!

http://www.rouper.com/ is putting in a good effort to try and compete with Flippa. If they can continue to grow in size and get more listings, they may have a shot.
Good advice, although I just started my own blog from scratch. Since this is my first venture of this nature, I think that I’ll see how it goes before considering buying an existing one.
