Pros and Cons of Traditional Hosting Options

One of the things that has made traditional hosting so resistant to the attacks of new technology is that it offers so many different options. For large companies that are running a substantial portion of their business online, dedicated servers can be purchased. Shared servers are ideal for small businesses that just need to run a few minor things, with web hosting starting at just a few dollars a month. Virtual private servers allow businesses to enjoy the advantages from both.

On the dark side (boogie boogie, these options all have drawbacks. Shared servers mean limited control and lowered security. Dedicated servers are very expensive. Virtual private servers require painful and time consuming in-house maintenance, or a hired outside server management service.

Traditional Hosting Server Space

Even shared servers offer plenty of additional space for you to store your files. While it used to be that bandwidth created a concern, it is now only the highest traffic sites and servers that have any problems of these nature. It doesn’t cost much to get some extra space.

One of the drawbacks (like anything, there is one) is that if you’re going for the most affordable space, you don’t have complete control over it. These stored files can be slow loading and have lowered security, unless you’re willing to pay the extra for a dedicated server. If you do decide to get a dedicated server, you will have to pay a lot for it, even if you hardly use it over the course of a month.

Traditional Hosting Tech Support

Standard hosting companies will provide personalized technical support to help you do whatever needs to get done to get your server running at peak performance. This is included in almost every hosting package.

That being said, most of the tech support isn’t exactly “wizard” quality and often times you’ll have to go through many hoops just to get a final fix. There are also many more technical support issues to deal with, overall, due to the need for server upgrades, software upgrades, and other items over which you have no control.

Traditional Hosting Email Accounts

Exchange hosting allows for lowered in house expenses for your email services, easier collaboration, and offers these advantages at an affordable cost. This service is included in many traditional hosting services, and is available in almost all of them.

The painful drawback is that exchange hosting emails all come from your server’s IP address, so your emails can be declared “spam” through no fault of your own.

So, look at all your options and choose carefully when you’re thinking about using a traditional host. There are other alternatives out there that provide greater benefits. If it breaks- they’ll probably be better at fixing it too :)

I agree with the fact that tradition web hosting tech support isn’t the best that you can find.

Just a couple of days ago, I had a problem and went over to the tech support section of my hosting provider, thinking it’d be a quick fix. Seemed simple enough.

Well, it turned out that I was WRONG!

The “quick” call turned into a 45 minute discussion, only to lead up to my assumption that they had no idea how to fix it.

Tech support on hosting services is good for simple things, but not for all things.

    Great post :D

Yup Joe you are right. Almost all of us who are in shared traditional servers have at one point of time came across customer care people who are very arrogant, rude and some who do not have any knowledge about web hosting. The main reason of it being that the whole process is outsource to some other country.

Well bro Blogger has its own set of pros and cons and yes if you really cannot pay a few bucks for hosting a wordpress for yourself then Blogspot blog is better than WordPress.com blog cos it offers more features and is more customizable

  7. TechChunks says:

Once your blog reaches the threshold where it generates at least 10-20k UVs daily you’ll eventually feel the need to upgrade to cloud-based hosting. Same can happen if you are shared hosting, NOT using any caching plugins and one of your posts hit Digg home page :P

Other than shared hosting, VPS hosting is the next step up. But with this option, like in my case, it’s hard to find a VPS that you can get MsSQL server 2005 installed on.

I had to use a dedicated server for my windows sites, and the almost $500/mth price tag for the server can hit you hard at times.

Would be nice to find a VPS with the options that I need.
