Playing Games on Browsers in not a new experiment. There have been numerous such experiments done and such experiments resulted in what we say now as online gaming. Even though online gaming through browsers has evolved a lot but there is always a need of downloading something or installing a plugin to our browser.

Now, Three of Google’s Engineers have ported the the very popular First person shooter game Quake II to browsers without the need of installing any plugins – that too just to demonstrate the power of HTML 5.

Even though people can already play Quake in their browsers ref. Quake Live engine based on Jake 2.  Google has used the same Java 3D game engine that Quake2 engine uses.

Here is what the Google engineers who performed this task says:

We started with the existing Jake2 Java port of the Quake II engine, then used the Google Web Toolkit (along with WebGL, WebSockets, and a lot of refactoring) to cross-compile it into Javascript. You can see the results in the video above — we were honestly a bit surprised when we saw it pushing over 30 frames per second on our laptops (your mileage may vary)!

You can check out this video of the HTML5 rendered Quake II:

Now the thing is that this game will be supported in only HTML5 ready browsers like Chrome and Safari. No Firefox for now unfortunately.

Weird to think that in high school, you needed a top of the line PC to run Quake II. Now it runs as a free app in your browser like a flash game.

It is indeed a new step. Most games for these days are well on browsers. A convenient way to have the game played directly. Just load it up and viola here goes the game.
Most browser games are on strategy, one popular example is on GALAXY ONLINE 2.

  4. Its like you read my mind! You seem to grasp a lot approximately this, like you wrote the guide in it or something. I believe that you just can do with some p.c. to drive the message house a bit, but other than that, that is fantastic blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.
