Motorola and Google Unveil the New Droid X
About a month back we had been able to find some leak pictures and the specifications of the new version of the Motorola Droid. Yesterday, in the evening (i.e. When most of us this side of the globe were sleeping) the executives of Google, Verizon and Motorola gathered at San Francisco for a Press Event and unveiled the latest version of the Droid, the Droid X.
The Droid is one of those Android phone which has been able to prove that non-Apple smart phones can also be successful.
Features of the Droid X:
- Runs Android 2.1 with a version of Motoblur and packs a 1GHz ARMv7 processor.
- 4.3-inch handset that will capture 720p video
- ight megapixel camera, 16:9 display, HDMI playback
- Support for Flash 10
- WiFI hotspot for up to five devices
- Up to 40GB memory (8 GB on the phone and 16 GB on a card, to start)
- It wont have a physical keyboard but a virtual keyboard which will feature Swype and it will be multitouch too.
- The Device is Green: PVC-free, bromine-free, mercury-free and arsenic-free, and its packaging is 65% recycled materials.
The Droid X will start shipping July 15 and will be available for $199.99. Users will pay $29.99 for smartphone service and $20 additional for mobile hotspot. Upgrades will be available immediately on launch. The device will be available from retail outlets such as Best Buy as well as Verizon stores.
But the bad part is that this device will be available only for US Verizon Customers.
Do you think Droid X will be able to give enough competition to the iPhone 4. Please share your thoughts with us in the comment

Yeah, I am intending to buy a new phone to replace my old Nokia. I was very impressed with iPhone 4 after Steve Jobs’ presentation but now I don’t care about it. I am hesitating among Nexus One, Hero, Desire and this Droid X.

I saw the phone in the shop and it looks very nice. I currently have HTC TyTN II which did a good job for me in the last 6 months, but as soon as I get salary I am gonna buy it immediately. I read few blog reviews and when I saw it in my hands, I told my self that I am gonna buy it.
In terms of design and features, Motorola has been always been a step behind its competitors. Thus, they have lost a lot of marketshare over the years.
I think Droid will help Motorola become a serious smartphone player again.

I have been a longest time owner of a samsung omnia, and am thinking on buying the Droid X in 2 months when I have an upgrade available. I would like to compile as much knowledge on this device as possible in advance. More than just the usual apps and ringtones. I wanna know how to root this device and edit the registry if needed. Also I’d like to add HTC Sense UI if possible.
looking forward for this device

I officially simply cannot hold out for this smart phone, just two days left and I just hope I can get my hands on one,. I have been reading a lot about the Android 2.2 update which can come in August, just another reason to be thrilled about this excellent phone. Motorola and Verizon wireless claim they will update the phone to Android 2.2 “late summer time.” It will certainly be an over-the-air update. But out-of-the box on its July 15 launch it may have Android 2.1.
I have already been sense a minor heat this a . m . from a few folks not wanting to believe that the Droid X stock may be limited on release day, as we noted previously. Well we’ve just grabbed 5 additional screenshots from 5 pretty major markets and I’d say once again in which inventory looks to end up being pretty minimal to me. A few associated with the major retailers get up-wards of sixty devices, but some might simply have five items. Now maybe these quantities tend to be over average for a Verizon wireless release, nevertheless for a device this big, I speculate I just figured retailers would have tried to have been overstocked.
The Motorola DROID continues to present new possibilities everyday. I have had it for about 10 months and I’ve had a Blackberry attached to my body due to the fact September 1998. Being connected is often a essential aspect of my life so I’m generally reachable by household and co-workers. I am a bit addicted towards Industry for DROID Applications. If the device had limitless memory I would test the capacity. I feel this OS may be the way with the future and intend to develop with all of you to understand it by way of and through. Thanks for your post.
Whilst I really like a bodily keyboard, after dealing with the Samsung Captivate for approximately quarter-hour, it’s onerous to go back. Presently I’m debating whether to go to Verizon for the Droid X, pass to Dash for the EVO, or stay with AT&T for the Captivate…choices, decisions.
