Surely that if you are working and running an agency, no blakc hat methods as they will kill your business immediately. I agree that the proper communication with the client that is really important. The result of your work depends a lot on how well you ca speak with the clients and explain them the best ways to promote a site.
Its really better to use legitimate (white hat) methods allowed by the search engines. Stay as far as possible from black hats which only have temporary initial positive effects. In the long run, you can get punished.

You are 100% correct in that slow and steady wins the race. I have seen countless times where people took the fast easy way and it never lasts. I guess as long as people look for the easy way to do things this will always continue. I have clients all the time telling me what I need to do for them SEOwise because some three year old article they read on Google told them a ‘link wheel’ with 10k links to it is the way to go. I always put it like this:
