How to Start the Viral Aspect of Marketing

| August 28, 2011 | 14 Comments More

When it comes to internet marketing, nothing is better than to start the viral effect for your website or blog. To actually get the ball rolling, and begin the viral aspect of marketing, we need to know exactly what viral marketing really is:

“of, relating to, or caused by a virus” –Dictionary.com

That means to start the viral aspect we need to have content that will not just entertain the user, but force him to become attached. This might mean creating some relationship, or by creating some extraordinary product or content. That’s what I’m here for! Together you and I can produce a viral product, blog, website, squeeze page, and more!

viral marketing

The easiest type of website to make viral on the internet is a squeeze page. It’s really easy to make a squeeze page viral, the trick is simple make it short, simple, and don’t give them anything! When I always talk about online marketing one strategy seems to always come to mind: less is more.

Recently I visited the highest converting squeeze page ever. It was simple and straight to the point. It had a nice headline, with a small catch phrase below it, and under that is a download button. Next to all of that is a short screen shot video explaining the product. As soon as you click the download button a lightbox pops up asking only for your email. It basically says, Request Early Access and “no credit card required, it’s free.” But after filling out your email the lightbox now says, insert a beta key or tweet this to get early access. My guess would be that 50% of the visitors gave their email address, and 80% of that 50% probably tweeted. That is the perfect plan to start the viral effect!

See there are many tricks, but to really start the viral effect you need to follow these simple guidelines in order to produce the same results as the squeeze page above. First, you need to actually make some sort of page where your visitors can opt-in. Even if you own a blog you can still create a cool squeeze page to go with your blog. One of the major parts to create a viral product is to bring in social media. Maybe allow Facebook comments or require a tweet before download. In my opinion, I would rather use Optimize Press rather than create my own squeeze pages manually. It’s much easier and can provide the same viral effect on Twitter and Facebook!

Finally, don’t fill up your squeeze page with too much content. Make it short and sweet. The squeeze page I talked about above convinced me to enter my email address in ten words and only ten words. It was just that simple! Your visitors might not have much time and when they arrive to a page that takes ten seconds to load because of all of the content, as a result you already lost that lead.

Depends a lot on business and business niche. Personally I don’t like and I don’t use squeezed pages, as I am promoting multiple items and services. Sure squeezed pages work well for electronic products and email collection, but not for serious businesses.

Easier said than done, right? :) LOL
In my experience the only real viral ad campaigns that catch on have some kind of humorous or perplexing nature that ends up making you laugh or amused in some way and that’s why you end up fowarding to people.. I’m not sure if a chain of a few people clicking on links from automated tweets is going to be very successful?? Maybe I’m just thinking narrowly of the limited viral campaigns I’ve become aware of, mostly executed by huge multi-million dollar companies who launch vast viral campaigns.

Sometime social bookmarks work well for me, newsletter and Youtube videos are evergreen. I rarely do squeezed pages, but sometimes conversion is much better if I apply this model.

Tricks alone without a useful content/product eventually will fail and might even come back hurting much more. Tricks accompanied with a good offer can succeed fantastically.
