How To Setup MaxCDN For Your WordPress Blog?
It’s really good if your website loads in few seconds but this does not happen with everyone’s site and specially not for newbies in this blogosphere so to increase the page speed and to reduce the number of requests made to the server you must use CDN (Content Delivery Network) like MaxCDN. I personally like it very much. By using this awesome Content Delivery Network, you will not only be able to increase the speed of your blog/site but also reduces the load on your server, which is quite an important aspect if you are on shared hosting. If you are thinking that you already use some caching plugin for making your site load faster then let me tell you that only installing a caching plugin is not enough, you should and must a CDN. In this article I will be telling you How to Setup MaxCDN for your WordPress Blog and make it super fast.
So lets start with the tutorial and learn how to setup MaxCDN for wordpress blog.
Step 1: Need To Have MaxCDN account :
You need to have MaxCDN account, if you don’t have than signup here. MaxCDN costs only 39.95 per Terabyte that is 1000 GB (1024 precisely speaking)
Step 2: Creating Pull Zone :
After you are logged into your account click on “Manage Zone” tab, the tab next to Dashboard
Now the next step is to create a “Pull Zone” so that you can use this CDN in your wordpress blog. This can be done by going to Manage Zone >> Summary Tab /Pull Zone Tab >> Click Create Pull Zone.
Now you have to enter some details, See the below explanation and do according to that.
- Pull Zone Name : Any name that you want but should not contain any special character and spaces.
- Origin Server URL : The full URL of your blog including “http://”
- Custom CDN Domain : The new CNAME record which you will use to redirect. (eg: cdn.yourdomain.com)
- Label : Any name you can use to identify your pull zone.
- Compression : Check mark this option to compress your CSS and JavaScript files.
See the below screenshot and you will come to know how to fill it up.
Step 3 : Creating a CNAME Record :
Once you have successfully created the pull zone, you will be provided some URL to create a CNAME record make note of that.
Go to your Hosting account cPanel and click on “Simple DNS Zone Editor”
It will open up the DNS editor now you simply have to create a new CNAME record with the detail provided by the MaxCDN.
- Name : Enter the name that you have created in “Custom CDN Domain” option (cdn.example.com)
- CNAME : Enter the URL provided by MaxCDN, it will be something like this example.example.netdna-cdn.com.
Step 4 : Setting Up MaxCDN In WordPress With W3 Total Cache Plugin :
Now you have to log in to your WordPress dashboard and then click on “Performance Tab” (It’s assumed that you have installed W3 Total Cache Plugin).
Click on General Settings and Enable the CDN setting and in CDN type select NetDNA/MaxCDN.
Now you have to configure the CDN setting for that go to Main CDN setting in your W3TC plugin and go to the configuration part.
Before that you need to have API Id and API Key so for getting that log in to your MaxCDN account >> Manage Account >> API >> click on Add Key. note down the API Id and API Key provided by MaxCDN. One thing while setting up API key in Description field you can write “Master Key“.
Now back to your WordPress setting, configure it with proper value and save it.
- API ID : Insert API Id provided b MaxCDN.
- API Key : Insert API key provided by MaxCDN.
- SSL Support : No need to change any thing.
- Replace the Site Host name with : The CNAME record (cdn.example.com)
For safety click on TestDNA button if everything is ok there will be no error. Click on Save all setting to save your setting.
That’s it, congratulations now your site is powered by MaxCDN which will optimize your site and will enhance and increase the overall performance of your site.

Thanks! This sounds incredibly easy with your tutorial, especially with the screenshots. How does it work to increase the loading speed? It is because the site is loaded by the content network closest to the user? That’s probably a crazy lame question but, is it that or just that with shared hosting you are competing with other sites?
Thanks!

Content delivery networks (CDN) holds your css, javascript , image file s in those servers. For example , if your browsing from USA, then when the website loads parallel the possible and nearest MAXCDN servers get into the action and loads all static files which makes your website loads fast.

This type of service is not required for all type of blogs and newbies. If your site needs to download large amount of files of different format then only we need such type service only.
Thank you for your valuable tutorial.

How can I be sure that its installed correctly? I dont see the CDN url in my images. Is there any way to check it is all correct?
MaxCDN is good but not necessary if you run blog on Hostgator.
On the other hand, MaxCDN’s price is expensive for beginners.
Thanks Hung. Why is it not necessary if youre on Hostgator? I signed up for the Black Friday deal. so I spent 1 dollar.

Smart move. That $1 was the ultimate deal. Infact, that was the best CDN deal ever. My friend too got that cheap deal. And Hung, its not that if you are on Hostgator then you don’t need CDN. There’s no such funda.

Very helpful. I am wondering if Cloudflare is enough if your site isn’t getting a ton of traffic? They offer some off-loading of items and handle a lot of requests while protecting your site. All my sites are setup on their free service.
