How to Choose Online Payment Services

| March 6, 2010 | 4 Comments More

When it comes to accepting credit cards online, Internet retailers have a wide variety of payment services to choose from. But how do you know which one is apt for your business needs? Before making a decision, here are a few key things to consider.

Fees – The bottom line is often the most important consideration for many retailers and while it should be the exclusive deciding factor (the most expensive service isn’t necessarily indicative of the best), it only make sense to opt for a service that fits within your budget. Have prospective services itemize total costs so you can see exactly what you will be expected to pay. Also, keep in mind that some payment services may appear to be the cheapest, once you factor in additional fees, such as monthly statement fees, another provider may be more affordable.

Reputation – Payment services are the keystone of any successful online business so it is imperative you select a service that has built a solid reputation and established itself as a leader in the industry.

Trustworthiness – In a similar vein, trustworthiness is another important characteristic to seek, considering you will be handling customers’ confidential information including credit card numbers.

Customer Service – Look for providers that offer ample and flexible customer service solutions. For example, if something goes wrong with the payment services on your website, you should be able to contact your provider 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to quickly resolve the issue.

Reporting Capabilities – As an online retailer, it’s important you manage your payments as efficiently as possible. Subsequently, payment services should offer a myriad of reporting capabilities including real-time transaction statements, customer data, and more.

Fraud Detection – Online credit card fraud is skyrocketing and consequently, online retailers are incurring massive losses. Look for payment services that offer their clients comprehensive fraud detection tools to help you minimize your risk for fraudulent orders.

Technical Support – Inquire about the technical support offered by a prospective payment service provider. Many online retailers do not have an in-house IT department so it is important they choose payment services who can provide technical support when it comes to implementing their payment solutions.

  1. This is something that I am looking at as I look further into product creation for my blog. I know I will go with a service provider like Clickbank or e-Junkie, but at the moment it is trying to find the best one for me.
