How to Avoid Twitter Spam

| January 8, 2012 | 5 Comments More

Twitter is no more the same place that it used to be before a couple of years. Instead of some real informative and useful updates, it’s getting filled up with millions of spam tweets. For example, if you post something related to “iPhone” or “iPad”, you are likely to get hit with one of the rash of Twitter spammers. Those spammers search through Twitter for people who post about the terms (like the above, iPhone/ iPad etc.) and usually @reply to them with some “deal” like ‘win a free iPad or iPhone’.

Few times it becomes a real headache to get rid of such spammers. Who in this world loves spammers, after all! So to get rid of these obstacles or unwanted things I am going to guide you and make you feel relax.

You may argue here that you can always block those spammers. But what would you do if one of your tweets gets re-tweeted by someone very popular on Twitter, and you start getting tons of spam replies. And this affects the user experience.

There were situations when people had to delete their accounts or stopped logging in to their accounts. Can you believe that people are making a hell lot of money out of this? They just spread spam tweets that contain their affiliate links, and whenever a genuine person shows interest in that, the spammer eventually earns some money as his affiliate bonus. Keeping this new business strategy in mind, more and more people are getting into Twitter spamming.

Being one of the leading social networking sites, Twitter could have come ahead to handle such issues. It’s really unfortunate to see that Twitter is not having enough arrangements to let the spammers rest in peace. And hence there is a need of third party apps to take care of your Twitter account.

Here are some methods you may use in order to avoid spam:

1. The best thing to do is follow @spam, a service provided by Twitter’s headquarters. If you find a spammer, just report it to them. If the person is found guilty, he will be blocked from the website.

2. You can follow @safety as well. This is another service of Twitter which provides information as to how you can keep your accounts free from spams.

3. You can use services like SocialOomph Opt-Out or TweetBlocker. These services allow users to avoid automatically sent direct messages and check fellow users’ spam grades, a standard A-to-F scale.

These are few tips on how to avoid Twitter spammers. Hope you liked the article.

I must say that I’ve been followed by many people without even single tweet and thousands of followers, usually I do not follow back this accounts as most likely this is fake and automated profiles.

Thanks for the tips, I will follow @spam and @safety, and check out the services to prevent automated @dm.
I always preview someone’s twitter history before I follow them back. I was not always doing this and spent a lot of time cleaning my following list to eliminate the spammers. Since doing that Twitter has become fun and useful social media channel to utilze. I would much rather have a smaller network of active and authentic users than a large network of spammers and bots.

    Thanks
