How to add smilies to WordPress Blogs

| March 31, 2010 More

Smileys or Emoticons have been used for decades to express emotions. The first use of emoticons was documented in 1857 and it was in the form of a morse code. And then it was popularized in the internet world by the Instant Messengers and Chats where people used to express their feelings with the help of these smileys.

The main problem with WordPress is that it’s Smileys are too boring. It is not a point of worry since we can easily change the custom plugin with extremely cool Emoticons/Smileys with the help of plugins. There are many such plugins out there but the only two worth using are : Custom Smilies and Smilies Themer plugins. You can choose which one you would want to use but my choice would go with Smilies Themer. These two plugins will allow you to add any type of custom smiley packs to your blog.

1) Custom Smilies:

Custom Smilies (previously named Custom Smileys) gives you a chance to personalize your posts and comments using smilies of your choice instead of default ones.

  1. Download and extract custom-smilies.zip; then, upload init.php and custom-smilies.php to the /wp-content/plugins/custom-smilies directory. Uploadsmilies folder to the /wp-includes/images directory.
  2. Activate Custom Smilies in your Admin Panel
  3. Put your smilies in smilies folder (wp-includes/images/smilies/)
  4. Change the emoticons by navigating to Manage > Smilies and complete the form

Download the Plugin here:

2) Smilies Themer:

Smilies Themer allows you to use smilies (emoticons) themes (or packs) to replace the wordpress default ones.

The plugin adds a .wp-smiley class to every smilie.

The following code is recomended (Thanks 0xCAFE):

Themes

A theme is just a set of emoticons and his corresponding image.

You can add any image, any emoticon, mix them, whatever you want.

Just take a look at any of the included themes to know how make your own.

As I said the above plugins will allow you to add custom smileys or emoticons packs on your WordPress blog. The following 4 plugin will allow you to add a standalone Emoticon pack.

This smilies plugin contains the cat characters of Japanese anime style. Download by clicking here

2) PaoPaoBing Smilies:

This plugin contains funny army character emoticons. Download here

3) Blacy Smilies:

Black emoticons with unique emotions, Download here

You can know from the name :) Download the plugin here

Installation Procedure for these 4 plugins:

1. Download the respective plugin

2. Upload the file  into wp-content/plugins then activate it.

3. Go to writing section in Settings and DISABLE the option “convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display“.

4. Some of the files are in indonesian or Chinese language, if you like to change it in english or other language just rename the picture on file folder and also edit the code in plugin editor. (Optional Procedure)

LOL! The similies are really cute. Using smilies in comment box is cool to express emotions, but I don’t think using them in posts is good as they make the post look informal (un-professional). :-S
