‘How Secure is Your Password’ Tool – Sure Your Password is Secure?

| July 1, 2010 | 25 Comments More

Each day we are becoming more and more dependent on the Internet and along with Internet comes the issue of Security. We have started to do everything in the Internet like shopping, banking etc. and we even share much of your personal information through social media. So to keep all these things secured we must have a very powerful password. A password which cannot be cracked by Internet miscreants and hackers.

Passwords are like lock and keys to our Internet life. Having a weak password is like hanging a breakable lock in your door. An intruder can easily break that lock and get into your house and take away all your valuables. It is safer to keep away from Dictionary keywords and simple combination of numbers which can be easily cracked while choosing a password.  But it is still very hard to know which password is strong enough.

‘How Secure is My Password’ tool is one such tool which will show how much secured your password is. Just type in any random numbers or alphabets and symbols, the tool will automatically show you how long it would take a desktop PC to crack your code. The tool also maintains a list of 500 most common password which contains dictionary words and many other common passwords (The dubious top 500 list, as we found out, includes ’123456,’ ‘baseball,’ etc) so whenever we type any password which belongs to this list, the tools tells us that the password is too common and can be cracked instantly by a hacker.

We are really not sure how correct or scientific this estimate is but the tool seems to be developed by a fine programmer. The other thing we noticed is that the tool depends on the number of characters for determining the security of the password. For example the password combination “SupermanBatman” would have taken 204,000 to crack. Change it to any other 14 letter word, the time taken will be same, i.e. 204,000. Just add a number behind “SupermanBatman” then the estimate changes to 700 million years. Actually after keying in some random letters, we were able to find a random combination which would reportedly take a PC about “150 nonillion years” to break.

That’s a fantastic looking tool! I have already been hacked once, and I really do intend on not allowing it to happen again. Thank god it wasn’t anything like a bank account that got hacked; I’d be ruined!

    Great post, Shiva!

Yes D.I> But I do not think that Google or Yahoo tells you how many years or million years it takes for a hacker to hack your password is not it? It only says that the password is strong or weak not how much breakable it is ;)

      • But u can’t rely on that soft. which has come just now, and not hearing google or yahoo…..
Even the hackers can crack your password in few minutes or hours

wait i must check it out and then reply u back…..

Yah, you are right but well having a hard password has advantages in the viewpoint of security. You could just try and remember the password.

The problem is the number of passwords we need!!

Blog admin; cPanel x number of sites; bank sites, membership sites; webmail etc etc

It’s impossible to remember them all so we have to resort to say Roboform or 1Password.

Everything is then only as secure as the password to that!! You have to make it difficult to crack but then you have to record it or you’d soon forget all those %^gg*$>> arrrgh.

I’m looking forward to “iris recognition” software.

I was using add-on for Mozilla which was storing my passwords, for every account random letter + symbols. Tool was working great, but I had full hardware crash and I lost the master key. Currently I am just trying to use difficult to remember passwords and write on my notepad.

Having a look at the common passwords is ok, if this tool leaks ur paswd to any brute force dictnry, then it may be dangerous instead.

Well the tool does not do any server side function (does not store passwords)…everything is done on the client side. The tool is only there to show you the strength of your password and nothing else. They are trying to make your aware so that you can have a stronger password. And ya the tool source code are also freely download able and open source. I have checked and there is no connection with the server. It works stand-alone on client side

  12. Passwords is a very important and we must be careful with that. Not have to be masochistic, but rather careful because obviously we must use letters with numbers such as: d4n13l4 (daniela). It is a very interesting tip. Greetings.
