Google Freshness Update – How To Keep Up With It
Google’s Latest Algorithm update – The Freshness update is suppose to affect 35% of search queries which Google believes need to be served with latest content first. Site Authority is still a factor in deciding which latest posts need to be served on top.
Amit Singhal from Google stated
“Given the incredibly fast pace at which information moves in today’s world, the most recent information can be from the last week, day or even minute, and depending on the search terms, the algorithm needs to be able to figure out if a result from a week ago about a TV show is recent, or if a result from a week ago about breaking news is too old.”
How to get your content on top with new freshness update-
- Right time to update OLD Posts – If there are old posts on your blog which can be updated with new information, now is the right time.
- Social is New SEO – Social Media is changing the way search engine use to work and Freshness update is recent example. This is one of the signal Google uses in ranking fresh content. As soon as new post is updated on your blog, update it on all social networks quickly. This will help Google index your new post quick and get you ranked also make sure your blog have easily social share buttons for visitors.
- Google+ and Twitter – Google is currently using Google + and Twitter in discovering new content so work on building followers because the more people share it, the better it gets. On the other hand Bing is using Facebook data to rank new or viral posts so make sure you keep up with it too.
- If you’re running a static / Business Website , Start Blogging on the same domain about your industry and niche.
It makes a lot of sense for the search engines to try to capture this kind of information as quickly as possible. As I mentioned in the start of this post, I think social media has changed the expectations of searchers, and if I read about something happening in Twitter, I’m going to expect to be able to find out more in Google afterwards.
Note: Some sites with evergreen content don’t need to change much because they won’t be affected. The change doesn’t mean that we must publish new blog posts every day. I guess owners of news/recent updates site will have to work harder in the upcoming time.

Actually, great tip about updating old posts with new content. I hadn’t thought of that affecting the google freshness update, but it makes sense. The one thing I do though is that I will go back and update old posts to improve seo. But I should also add new content where possible. thanks for the tip!

I think that this is both a good and a bad thing: it’s good because it offers new bloggers a chance of getting on top and even better, challenges people to create new & updated content.
However, on the other hand, even though authority sites will be on top, I guess that this change will encourage more people to create new blogs to get some money after this.
So I’m really curious to see who will have more to win in the end: the “old” blogs, new ones or just the readers.

Hi there,
That would only make sense that they would look for fresh content. I think that the SEOs are trying to keep up with the growth of the internet and try to improve it at every opportunity. Very nice post. Thanks for all the good information.

This Freshness update on Google comes to deal with the last update on Yahoo/Bing algorithm that use this logic for SERP.
Analyzing my SERP rank on Yahoo/Bing, it seems that the “freshness” is more important here than it has in Google

Actually its good to update the old post and yes its really helpful for google ranking
The freshness update benefited many news sites but a lot of bloggers in my network got hit with this update as well. I tend to write evergreen content and I’ve seen search traffic drop off. I think this is more of a way to push people into using Google Plus and reinforcing the need for social proof.

If the work is consistent and done properly, keeping up with updates is not very problematic. Most of the times, I may loose few positions for no more than a week after any update, which I think is pretty normal.

I think the Google Freshness update gives us all a chance to get ahead of all the lazy (mainly corporate) sites out there that do not change their website content very much. Excellent idea of updating old content.
