Google Contemplating Calling Pagerank Something Else?

| March 4, 2010 | 11 Comments More

We all know what Pagerank is and how much significant it is for a million of people online. But Google may want to change the name Pagerank to something else since the people down at Google have started to feel that webmasters have started focusing too much on Pagerank.

Last Year too Google quietly got rid of PageRank in Webmaster Tools. Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa had said, “We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.”

Here is a video of Google’s Director of Research, Peter Norvig speaking on the topic

here:

Norvig said at SMX today that PageRank is still one thing that is “overhyped,” and that Google never felt that it was such a big factor. They have always looked at all available data, combining every available signal and tiring to figure out the best way to combine them.

Norvig also said that it may be time for some re-branding with regard to PageRank. There may be a different term in the pipeline. “There’s a technical formula that’s PageRank, which is the way of judging the links between pages, and that’s just one component of how we rank the pages and you get your final search results. There’s all these other things that come in, but they don’t have a catchy name. So some people apply PageRank to mean all the components that give you the final ranking, and that’s where we get confused. So probably we need some other term for that…We’ll get some marketing guys on it.”

I don’t know how seriously the company is considering this, as Norvig seems to simply be speaking off the cuff, but given the company’s repeated emphasis on a lack of emphasis on PageRank, it would not be surprising to see them change the name. However, the problem with that could be, that these same PR-obsessed webmasters would just become obsessed with the re-branded term.

  1. I definitely think PageRank is overhyped but that doesn’t stop me from looking forward to my first update. I’d much rather see my search engine traffic increasing.

Ya! I agree but Google seems to be bit worried that people are taking Pagerank as the only factor that determines SE Rankings, but it is not that

  4. Adeel says:

Absolutely right Page Ranks is not everything i also seen some sites who have a considerable PR and they are concentrating on have a high Page Rank instead of having a impressive look and quality services. They didn’t know that the visitor will be attracted by the professional look and quality of services instead of getting overloaded by the information.

I agree with you Adeel PR is not important as people feel it is, It is mainly the content which attracts the visitors. Thanks for visiting Netchunks

  5. TechChunks says:

I don’t mind them calling Pagerank as “what-ever they like” and even I don’t mind them dumping the whole notion of PR too… as long as my SE traffic is not affected adversely :P

  7. Well, I don’t think pagerank is really important.

  8. Rajeel says:

I don’t think that page rank is not important. It’s important. But the way of calculation of it is not at all accepted and it can’t be called as PageRank. I don’t think that the PR given by google are not at all acceptable in most of cases.

I got PR 2 only for my site, which had PR 3 on the past. But the same time one of my experimentel blogs – http://www.labofskins.blogspot.com has got PR-3. It really shows that PR is not real 0==(D)
