Easiest Way To Protect Your Computer from Rogue Security Software

| May 8, 2010 | 16 Comments More

Rogue Security software is one of the largest spreading online threats today. They are the online scams, which take hostage of your computer and force you to purchase the full license version of their software, claimed to be a genuine antivirus or security software. But the fact is that they are simply incapable of providing any sense of security to your computer.

How do Rogue Security Software Operate

Rogue Security Software enter your computer by exploiting browser weaknesses, security holes and taking help of some Trojan Horses already present there. They leave their traces, which make modifications to your system files such that you get lots of fake warning messages and alerts that your computer is infected with lots of viruses and spyware. They sometimes label legitimate and perfectly clean files as malware and at other times they display some fictitious files to be present in your system and claim that it is a malware.

The alerts and warnings are so frequent that the innocent user just cannot avoid them and forced to take action on these warnings.

The purpose of this entire exercise is to scare the victim and convince him that his computer is infected with malware and spyware. It then offers to clean the computer if the victim pays the money and purchases the full version of their software.

Once that software is purchased, the victim finds that it actually is incapable of providing any sort of security to his PC. But by that time, the money has already been pocketed by the fraudsters. Besides losing the money, the victim is forced to share his personal data like credit card number and other details, which might land in the hands of other fraudsters and can pose a greater danger to the victim’s security and privacy.

How to Protect Yourself from Rogue Security Software

The easiest way is to use caution. If you get any such advertisement do not get scared. Be patient and remember Google is your friend. Make queries and see, what people are saying about the software, which you are considering to purchase. You will most likely be able to find the truth.

See the attached Google search screenshots. One is for the recent rogue security software XP Security Software 2010and the other is for VIPRE, a genuine security software from Sunbelt. The difference is obvious and clearly tells that there is something wrong about XP Security Software 2010.

The trick is simple, but hundreds of people daily get scammed just because they do not take this simple step and just because of this, the rogue security software economy is continuing to grow exponentially.

There’s plenty of decent spyware removal software that one can download free. They key as your article has suggested is not to go into panic mode and download the fake security software that will infect your computer. Do the research and identify the reputable softwares. Even make an investment and purchase and application that gives you real time protection.

  8. One thing I always do is to investigate before clicking. Folks who are prone to rogue security software are those who are just new to the intricacies of the web.

Thank God I’m past that phase and I never encountered one that harm my computer during my early days as a web surfer ;-)
