Clearing up the Comment Links Mystery!
First and foremost, this post is more for those that are not quite so “au fait” with SEO, so before any of you rib me for talking about something that may bore you, please read on!
It is important as SEOs for us to remember that the “general” public may or may not know all that much in our world of business, so posting these articles is a way of helping the public to understand. So back to the mystery of comment linking (take head SEOs you may learn something).
First of all and most importantly, comment linking is NOT Black Hat SEO*!
“Screams and Gasps”.
As with any Link Building technique there are aspects to comment links that can be used as Black Hat techniques, but generally speaking it isn’t. Being arrogant isn’t going to improve the clients understanding of SEO and how the web world works and interacts!
Comment links can be used by Bloggers to interact with each other, and even draw traffic to their sites. This is actually a key interface that allows readers to find other blogs of interest, not to mention a great way for a blogger to find another, and possibly work in conjunction with each other. Comment links are meant to be used as a way of joining people together, and are by no means made to be a form of Black Hat SEO.
HOWEVER:
Now listen up those of you new to SEO, although it is important to remember that comment links can be used in your favour, and are a great form of communication, there is a possibility of some downsides.
1. When an SEO declares that he will do the majority of your link building through Comment Linking (which is unlikely, they probably wouldn’t admit it), be very wary, these links aren’t all that helpful, and they are considered “Black hat”.
2. SEOs aren’t interested in increasing your personal relationship with a blogger, so the comment links they leave could have some standard text, that probably doesn’t actually mean anything!
3. If an SEO tells YOU not to do Comment Linking, get a legitimate reason for why not! Here is why you should:
Building links between other relevant blogs and getting yourself noticed across them will help you. You will be able to build up relationships with other blogs, and you could even gain yourself some extra readers! Blogging is an important aspect of life, and so is comment linking!
To SEOs:
Don’t forget that explaining even the most “simple” things could actually help you and your client in similar ways!

Maybe you did not understand what the OP was trying to make you understand. He is telling that Comment Linking is an essential part of SEO but it should not be done in a spammy manner. If one does commenting in a spammy manner then it becomes black hat and worthless. Got the point bro
Cool.. Thanks =)

I wanted to ask the same question as Siva, do you really think it is a waste of time? I hope you can get back to us. But other than commenting, directory submissions and social networking. Would you have any other ways of doing SEO?

Check the above reply James. I think the OP has not got time for replies
Hi James,
Firstly sorry for taking so long to get back to you, and secondly anything involving Comment linking for SEO purposes i don’t condone!
Although there are small benefits from Comment linking it can take a long time for small reward.
I wouldn’t go as far to say “Don’t do it”, but there are other ways that are more successful and less spammy!
I was just giving a general overview of how Comments should be used, and what they are ideally used for!
I think comment doesn’t help for SEO but it helps to develop ranking

Well written . many times i’ve seen people ignoring blog commenting considering links from comments as a waste … maybe or may not be . But what helps is setting up of good relations b/w the bloggers and you learn something from each and every post you read on other’s blogs.

I don’t think it would be appropriate for a professional SEO to use comment links for SEO on a client’s website. If that client’s website was a blog, I would make an exception.
In my book, a professional SEO cannot call herself a professional if that is how she linkbuilds. There are much better, more professional ways of doing it. The professional part should matter.
Commenting is a great way to build up authority for a blog. For a professional business website though, you will be grouping your client’s website among the vast number of niche websites that spam the heck out of the blogging world.

I think we should comment for the love of contributing rather than thinking of SEO all the time as it will demoralize us if we see that we are still not ranked highly despite aggressive commenting.

Even if we forget about the SEO value of comment links for a moment, still then their ability to draw quality traffic is something that is much more important!

Blog commenting really helps to build links quickly, but comments must be reasonable and relevant to the topic and the website. The best link building strategy for successful SEO is to leverage between relevant websites, link directories, article directories, forum and blog commenting. For sure must not put the accent on just one aspect of link building. Google algorithms are becoming very smart and will not tolerate any attempt of black SEO. Only ethic SEO and link building will have success for longer run.

It is much better to check everything manually, unfortunately people do not have time. Some of the blogs that I maintain put large number of good comments in the SPAM which is really disappointing. I think the best way is to communicate with people that are commenting. This way, they will come again and as well will reduce bounce rate on your blog which is very important for SEO.
