Children’s Blogs: Markers of Personal Growth
It seems like everyone has a blog these days. There are many blog sites, even for children under 13. And children’s blogs have their pluses and minuses. First of all, kids love an audience. Blogs are a great way for them to express themselves and an opportunity to write about their favorite topics. This is an exercise in creativity no matter how you look at it, even if they and a couple of their close friends are the only ones reading the blog. It seems like children are getting more and more artistic every day. They either have a blog, play in a band, write poetry, or paint and draw. Sometimes they do all five.
Topics Children Love
Kids write about their favorite actors and actresses, singers, movies, songs, books, and more. The average 13-year old girl writes about Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Nick Jonas and other teen idols. “Writing” is maybe an overstatement – usually there are about 100 words or so and 10 or more pictures. Kid bloggers have above-average intelligence and are very critical of teen idols who appear underdressed in public, and rightfully so. This may come as a pleasant surprise to parents, who are concerned about bad role models.
Blogs are a very democratic means of expression. Kids can write about anything they want and anything they feel. They are a fundamental part of the child’s individuation process and facilitate personal growth.
When Does Blogging Become Inappropriate or Threatening?
It is not so much what the kid is writing but how it is perceived. Like Epictetus, the ancient Greek philosopher said, “People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them.” Some teenage girls (their number is relatively low) think it is cool to post provocative photos of themselves on their blogs. This is a way of expressing their newfound sexuality, and they don’t mean any harm. Unfortunately, they can become targets of pedophiles and other ill-meant persons. Personal information is readily available online; it is hard to remain anonymous. It would be best if kid bloggers simply concealed their identity. I would go as far as using a fake name. They should never post photos of themselves or give out their address and phone number.
Blogging and School
Kid blogs can be a useful tool for teachers as well. Kidblog is a pilot project designed by teachers, which allows them to monitor their classes. The process is safe and efficient. It is very easy to sign up and coordinate a class. Security is guaranteed and privacy is protected by default. Also, it is a lot of fun for the students. The creators of Kidblog proudly declare that this is the safest and most exciting blog platform for children in the world.
As you can see, the uses of children’s blogs are quite diverse. It comes down to the fact that they are fun for them to write and for others to read. They can also be beneficial for parents, as a blog keeps the child occupied.

You have pointing out good idea for new generation by simple blogging to become globally familiar and they became good base of the future world.
I’m in favour of kids who do blogging – and it is really interesting how kids and teenagers perceive the world and how they look at some things. I guess grown ups have to visit such blogs and read them – maybe they will understand their children better.
BUT at the same time, such blogs can be dangerous because such blogs can be a place for ‘dirty’ men with dirty thoughts. Unfortunately, you can do nothing to prevent it.
there is the responsibility of their parents and guardians to keep an eye on their kids when they work on computers. Anyhow kids blogging is appreciable and beneficial for the next generation.

It’s good way for writing their thoughts and ideas by kids but sometimes leaving their identity online may be risky.
Whatever kids do in the internet should atleast be supervised by an adult. We as parents must and should take extra care in protecting our kids while online. Its really important they have their own fun but safely.

Letting your children to have their own blog is a great idea. The child that enjoy blogging have always something to post in their blogsite. All the things that they love doing and they find interesting are good topic for them in which they wanted to share on us. Their topic changes when time passes by depending in their age and in their thinking. But as a parent for a child blogger, you must also ensure to monitor your child when they are blogging because they are still young and innocent and should still have limitations in some things.
Yeah! You have a good point. Early blogging exposure and intervention can help children develop their academic skills such as reading, writing, creativity and social skill, and even help them to establish life skills. They learn to be patient and they will know their responsibility. Indeed, blogging help children to reach their true potential.
the second point is what disturbs me a lot . giving away personal information on blogs can be potentially harmful in future …

At present we have very young bloggers aged 16 – i guess the next step will be bloggers aged 12-14. I think this aged group can be the most numerous as teenagers spend more time online than adults. If marketers invent how to make use these ‘teenager blogs’, they will get big money.
Yes it is the responsibility of the parents and guardians to motivate and encourage their children for good blogging in a simple and funny way according to their ability and sense.

I am all for this. I have 2 nieces and my sister is very adamant about them not having blogs. I think it would a great way for them to express themselves and they are both pretty astute, one is incredible when it comes to fashion and the other is a maniac when it comes to reptiles. I really thing it would be a great learning device but she is very against it. How could I go about talking to her about changing her mind?
Kid Bloggers are young minds so their ideas are pure… those blogs are truest form of blogging because adults find a way to make anything and everything a matter of earning profits.

I think it’s a good thing for kids to blog. It’s much better than just videogames or TV all day long. And even if they are not blogging and are just reading other kids blogs it’s still better than that. So thumbs up from me.
Keep up the good work
Cheers Alex

Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to understand a lot approximately this, like you wrote the e-book in it or something. I believe that you simply could do with a few p.c. to drive the message house a little bit, however other than that, that is magnificent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
