The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its slightly watered-down Senate counterpart, the PROTECT IP Act, would create a federal “blacklist” of sites that host copyrighted content. These sites would be deindexed from search engines and removed from U.S.-based DNS registries. In the House version, blacklisting a site wouldn’t even require a court order, but focusing on that misses the big picture: Websites that illegally host copyrighted content wouldn’t show up on search engine results and would virtually disappear from the Internet.

Not only that, but SOPA would introduce felony charges for non-commercial copyright infringement, so that someone who streams as little as ten videos from YouTube over a six month timespan can go to prison for up to five years. Unfortunately, most of the opposition to SOPA has hasn’t focused on the felony charges. Instead, it’s been aimed at the blacklist only. I think it’s very likely that proposing a blacklist is just a smokescreen by SOPA’s authors, a trick to misdirect public opposition to something that lobbyists and their politicians have no intention of passing, so that they can pass something equally objectionable (felony charges) without anyone noticing.

If SOPA passes, sites that are accessible in Canada and Europe won’t be accessible in the United States. YouTube and Vimeo will vanish. The Internet will collapse into a Venn diagram of censored Internets. Angry Birds checking to see if you’re using Google Chrome before it lets you log in will become small potatoes. Innovation, the driving force of the Internet and the technological boom, will be obliterated.

That’s why some companies and individuals are stepping up to the plate by building tools to help people fight SOPA. Folks at NetDNA are so upset about Internet censorship and felony charges for petty copyright violations that we’ve made a Firefox add-on that tells you if a site supports SOPA. It does this by checking against a list of websites of known supporters, such as the RIAA website, and notifies the user if the site they’re on is on that list.

1.    Focus On Preference. The first item on the list is your preference. What do you prefer? This is an important question for you. Of all the blog topics out there what do you prefer to go into? After identifying your preference, start to study all the blogs that relate to it and identify what issues, topics, events and even persons they have left out. Those are the gaps or your niche. Initially focus and build on them.

2.    Focus On Expertise. Your field of expertise will play a crucial role in finding your niche topic. You cannot write, comment or explain things that are out of your field of expertise.
