14 WordPress & Drupal Plugins to Make Your Blog Printer Friendly

| June 15, 2010 | 28 Comments More

Anyone who has attempted to print specific information off of a webpage understands the dilemma when 5 to 7 pages later, the information is printed but includes pictures, ads and other undesirable bits of knowledge that became part of the bargain. There are plug-ins available to ensure a blog in WordPress or Drupal is printer friendly. Other plug-ins provide various management options that include creating a web page, gathering traffic and customer related information or for keeping the blog free of spam.

Plug-Ins for WordPress

  1. Askimet: A plug-in that filters unwanted spam and backtrack links from comments.
  2. Blog2Print: This plug-in provides users with the capability of turning a blog into a book. There are options to create a PDF file or print to hard copy (extra charges apply), but it only prints on A5 paper.
  3. Cleanprint: Creates print friendly pages. Users have the option of creating a customized logo that appears at the top of printed pages.
  4. Post Teaser: Provides visitors with a sneak preview of archival, category and main pages in a blog. The plug-in includes estimated reading times, image and word count.
  5. Print Friendly: Enables bloggers to include a special button that visitors use to create print friendly formats. Specific information is printed without unwanted pictures and ads.
  6. PrintWhatYouLike: This plug-in automatically formats blog pages. The blog page can be customized to create a print layout or saved to PDF.
  7. Subscribe to comments: The plug-in creates a special area containing check box options enabling bloggers to know which customers or visitors elect to be notified by email.
  8. VoucherPress: Enables bloggers the ability to create customer vouchers and special incentives that can be downloaded and printed. Bloggers can implement time or quantity limits which cause the special offer to expire.
  9. WP Print: Creates printer friendly formats of blog pages.

Plug-Ins for Drupal

  1. #D7CX: Enables bloggers to create a PDF rendering which can be sent to customers by email. The plug-in also creates printer friendly formats for visitors. Drupal 5.17 or 6.11 is required.
  2. dompdf: This plug-in provides full CSS support and creates reproductions of a web page, but it is not unicode supported (only ISO-8859-1). PHP5 is required.
  3. Pdfview: Creates simple PDF’s from nodes and may include pictures. UTF8 is supported by the 4.7 version but relies on TCPDF.
  4. wkhtmltopdf: Launches the blog browser to create PDF. Uses 30Mb of RAM and requires an X server, but is considered one of the better plug-ins.
  5. PrinterFriendlyPages: Creates printer friendly formats and identifies and separates links, adding them as footnotes.

The plug-ins and modules make blogs more user friendly for customers and visitors, which increases traffic and conversion rates. They also equip bloggers, not possessing technical skills, the ability to create a web page with ease.

Drupal or WordPress? I think it depends on the specific plans ou have for your blog. WordPress works best for me as I don’t have any knowledge about programming code. WordPress makes it very simple and user friendly. Their plugins are also very useful.
